Taxonomy: Class Blastocystea
Animal: Blastocystis hominis (epidemiology) 1 05.jpg
Sites: Gut
Comment:
Age distribution of Blastocystis hominis 1988 to 1990. Reported prevelence ranges from 2 to 50 percent with prevelence amongst patients submitting specimens to the pathology laboratory approximately 7 percent . Prevalence in patients with symptoms does not seem to be significantly different from patients in control populations. This may be explained by differing protein and DNA contents which may indicate there are more than 1 species of Blastocystis hominis in humans. (studies by PFL Boreham, RE Pugh and D. Stenzel -see Bibliography for reference details)
